Margot Dydek, Ros Casares player, pregnant

9/29/07 Margot Dydek, center for Ros Casares Valencia, has become pregnant. The tallest professional basketball player in the world will not, then, be able to join the team in preseason, as was expected. This undoubtedly makes things much more complicated for the Liga Femenina champion and Euroleague runner-up, getting the news just days before the start of the season for the Valencian team.

Carme Lluveras, general manager de Ciudad Ros Casares, didn’t hide the fact that the news “is a major setback for our sport, since Margot Dydek plays an important role in this team. She is a player who, because of her special characteristics, brings a lot of intangibles to the game. Right now, the club will look for alternatives as quickly as possible, although it won’t be easy because of the fact that right now most of the really good overseas players are already commited to other top Euroleague teams.”

Born April 28, 1974 in Warsaw, Poland, Margot Dydek is a center and, at her height of 2.15 meters, is considered the tallest professional player in the world. The Polish star came to Ros Casares Valencia last season, achieving (with them) the Supercup, Queen’s Cup and Liga Femenina championship titles. Furthermore, the Valencian team qualified for the first time in its history to compete in the Euroleague Final Four, where they emerged as runners-up.

Dydek has 10 years experience in the WNBA. In the last season (2007), which ended just weeks ago, she played for the Connecticut Sun. Before that, the Polish center played for three other franchises: Utah Starzz (1998-2002), San Antonio Silver Stars (2003-2004) and Connecticut Sun (2005-2006).

Dydek’s ability to change games, regardless of Poland’s 76-74 loss in Eurobasket Italia, was considered a guarantee for the Ros Casares’ inside game. Ros were hoping to repeat this year their success of the 2006-2007 season, the best in the club’s history.

Dydek’s specialty was blocks, which she had come to average two per game in the Liga Femenina and Euroleague.

Ciudad Ros Casares Valencia and Margot Dydek had come to terms in February 2007 on a contract renewal for one more season, meaning they had secured her services through the 2007-2008 season. The Polish player came to Ros Casares last summer to start her second phase in Spain, having played from 1996-1998 for Pool Getafe.

Ros Casares learned the news this Saturday in Seville, where they had gone to play Club Nautico de Seville (from the Primera Nacional league) in a new preseason encounter. With this game against the reigning Liga Femenina champion and Euroleague runner-up, the Andalusian club grabbed the advantage and won the gold medal, adding to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the club.

The ten Ciudad Ros Casares players that competed in Seville: Noemí Jordana, Elena Tornikidou, Milka Bjelica, Marina Ferragut, Patricia Benet, Carla Benevides, Leles Muñoz, Anabel Mateo, Paloma Argaya and Begoña Pallardó – will land at Manises Airport this Saturday at 7:25 p.m. on flight IB 8839.

Ciudad Ros Casares Valencia, which in only a few days will face Perfumerías Avenida de Salamanca in the Supercup, has huge goals in retaining the Queen’s Cup and Liga Femenina crown, as well as retaining their leading role in the Euroleague crown. In continental competition, Manolo Real’s team remains in Group D, where they will have to face TEO Vilnius of Lithuania, MiZo Pécs 2010 of Hungary, Moscow Dynamo of Russia, USO Mondeville of France and CA Faenza of Italy.

Moscow Dynamo, reigning women’s Euroleague champion, MiZo Pécs (Hungary), a three-time qualifier (2001, 2004 & 2005) among the top four teams of the continent, and TEO Vilnius (Lithuania), which in 2006 came in third in the Euroleague, will be the primary rivals for Ciudad Ros Casares in the early phases, although USO Mondeville (France) and CA Faenza (Italy), Eurocup finalist, will not go away quietly either. This phase of qualification will be played from November 7, 2007 to January 23, 2008. The top four clubs from each group will succeed to the elite eight, coming to the best of three games on February 5,8 & 13. The finals, also played in the best of three games, will follow on February 26 & 29 and March 5. The championship round will be played April 11 & 13.

Ciudad Ros Casares prepared for the 2007-2008 season by signing Greek guard Evanthia Maltsi and Montenegrina wing Milka Bjelica.
