The battle for second place
(or, pity the Jealous Extremaduran (Celoso Extremeño), about to be sent down to second division)
By Clara Bermejo for FEB, translated by Jenna McKenna for Hoops-Nena.com
Two weeks and it’s game on for second place, fourth, eighth, and the battle to avoid getting sent down. Ten of 14 teams still in competition are locked in a battle for their destiny. Here we’ll look at each team’s record and see what outcomes could await them.
With Ros Casares already comfortably installed in first place in the Liga Regular, the main focus now is to secure the second place spot and home court advantage for the semifinals. CB San José is mathematically eliminated from second place, so that leaves EBE Promociones Santa Eulalia and Perfumerías Avenida.
EBE PROMOCIONES SANTA EULALIA
Record: 18-6
Left to play: Mann Filter (home) y Ros Casares (away)
Tiebreakers: They’ve beaten Perfumerías Avenida (+8) and lost to San José (-5). In a triple tiebreak with both, the Salmantinas (Avenida) would come out on top.
Needed for second place: Win both remaining games; win one game if Avenida doesn’t win both; can survive losing both games if Avenida and San Jose also lose both their remaining games.
PERFUMERÍAS AVENIDA
Record: 18-6
Left to play: Extremadura Dato (home) y Extrugasa (away)
Tiebreakers: They’ve lost to EBE Promociones (-8) and won against San José (2-0). In a triple tiebreak with both, Avenidas has the advantage.
Needed for second place: Win one game more than EBE Promociones; or Avenida and EBE could lose both and come to a triple tiebreak with San José
PASSPORT TO THE SEMIFINALS
Should be in the hands of Baloncesto San José, but Rivas Futura has a slim chance of getting the fourth slot for the semis.
BALONCESTO SAN JOSÉ
Record: 16-8
Left to play: Hondarribia (away) and Cadi La Seu d’Urgell (home)
Tiebreakers: They’ve beaten Rivas (+8)
Needed to get to semis: Win one of two games or hope Rivas loses one of their two.
RIVAS FUTURA
Record: 15-9
Left to play: Celta Vigourban (away) and Arranz Jopisa Burgos (home)
Tiebreakers: They’ve lost to San José (-8)
Needed to get to semis: Win both games and hope Bto San José loses both.
FOUR TEAMS FOR EIGHTH PLACE
Celta Vigourban, Extrugasa and Rivas Futura (or – remote possibility – San José) are the teams in the playoff to get the two Euroleague spots. There is one other spot with four teams competing for it, currently tied with nine wins each. There are plenty of possibilities, with two direct confrontations in the group.
HONDARRIBIA IRÚN
Record: 9-15
Left to play: CB San José (home) and Mann Filter Zaragoza (away)
Tiebreakers: They’ve beaten Cadi (2-0) and Olesa (+9), and lost to Gran Canaria (0-2). In triple tiebreaks they will lose the advantage whenever Canaria is involved.
GRAN CANARIA LA CAJA DE CANARIAS
Record: 9-15
Left to play: Extrugasa (home) and CB Olesa Espanyol (away)
Tiebreakers: They’ve beaten Hondarribia (2-0), lost to Cadi (-3) and one game left in the series with Olesa (which beat them at home by 11). They need to close out the Olesa series with a win.
CB OLESA ESPANYOL
Record: 9-15
Left to play: Cadi La Seu D’Urgell (away) and Gran Canaria (home)
Tiebreakers: They’re down against Hondarribia (-9) y and have a series-deciding game against Gran Canaria (which they beat by 11 in Las Palmas) and another against Cadi (which they also beat by 11 at home). If Olesa wins both games, they still need Hondarribia to lose one of two.
CADI LA SEU D’URGELL
Record: 9-15
Left to play: CB Olesa Espanyol (home) and CB San José (away)
Tiebreakers: They’ve lost to Hondarribia (0-2), won against Gran Canaria (+3) and have a series-decider with Olesa (to whom they’ve lost by 11 at Olesa). They don’t have much chance in triple tiebreaks, needing to win both their own games and hope for a total collapse by Hondarribia.
THE SEND-DOWN DRAMA
With Arranz Jopisa Burgos already sent down, Extremadura Dato and Mann Filter Zaragoza are fighting to stay out of second place, with a slight advantage to the Aragonesas.
MANN FILTER ZARAGOZA
Record: 7-17
Left to play: EBE Promociones (away) and Hondarribia (home)
Tiebreakers: They’ve beaten Extremadura (2-0)
Needed to stay up: Win at least as many games as Extremadura.
EXTREMADURA DATO
Record: 7-17
Left to play: Perfumerías Avenida (away) and Celta Vigourban (home)
Tiebreakers: They’ve lost to Mann Filter (0-2)
Needed to stay up: Win one more game than Mann Filter.
*There is the remote possibility that, in case both Mann Filter Zaragosa and Extremadura dato win both their games, there could be triple or quadruple tiebreaks amond the teams with nine wins. In those cases, Extremadura has the disadvantage for their losing record and -36 in their losses to Mann Filter.
**In case of a triple tiebreak with Arranz Jopisa Burgos, Mann Filter would come out on top.
